The works of Romanian artist Larisa Sitar reflect the changes in the social and cultural fabric of her home country that took place after the Romanian Revolution of 1989 against the communist – socialist dictatorship under Nicolae Ceausescu and still characterize everyday life until today. Larisa Sitar is an attentive observer of this situation and develops her sculptural and visual works from it.
Stucco-like elements, floral and figurative patterns as flat reliefs, decorative and profiled moldings have increasingly moved into the sameness of the former socialist home as an adaptation to Western lifestyles, bourgeoisie and an expression of individual taste. In many apartments and also in her own parental home, these elements were added to decorate and embellish everyday living.
Using analog and digital methods, Larisa Sitar develops her bas-reliefs from these elements or transforms the structure and form of a profile strip into a large and massive wall sculpture.
She also takes up art historical references in her works. Sculptures play with the sophistication of drapery, soft, flowing fabrics, ribbons and garlands that have fascinated artists for centuries.
